Bookplates are found on the inside covers of books dating back to the reign of Amenophis III in Egypt (1391-1353), with the most popular designs are linked to the victorian and elizabethan period. Relating to the owner of the book (perhaps even embodying the spirit), each intricate design seems to take on a sinister, dream-like and haunting nature. The study, collection and art holds the essence of a time, hinting, perhaps at the elitism of royalty.
Intrigued and going to scavenge for some books housing these collections from the library, once I have enough time on my hands.
